Colac & district
Colac is home base, so jobs around town, the lakes and the surrounding farms are close by. Expect everything from backyard removals and pruning to windbreaks, fence lines and stumps.
Local rule to know: Birregurra has its own Tree Protection Area, where a permit is needed to remove most trees — exotic as well as native. And across Colac’s residential areas, the state’s canopy-tree rules can apply to larger trees near the front or rear boundary.

Great Ocean Road
Coastal gums and cypress take a hammering from salt wind, and many blocks are steep and tight. Plenty of homes are holiday houses and the owners aren’t always there — tell us, and we’ll arrange access and keep you in the loop by phone.
Local rules to know: Skenes Creek, Kennett River, Wye River and Separation Creek sit in a landscape overlay where removing or lopping a tree usually needs a permit. Apollo Bay has its own landscape overlays for native vegetation, and Lorne is in Surf Coast Shire, with different rules again.

Otway Ranges
Up in the ranges it’s tall timber, tree ferns, wet gullies and soft ground. Access and weather decide a lot here, and hazard trees near houses, sheds and tracks need careful reading before anyone cuts.
Local rule to know: much of the ranges is covered by a landslip (erosion management) overlay, where removing vegetation generally needs a permit, with limited exemptions.

Any travel is built into your fixed-price quote, so there’s no separate travel charge added to the invoice.
Which council do I check with about a permit?
Most of the Otways, including Colac, Apollo Bay, Skenes Creek, Wye River, Forrest and the ranges, is in Colac Otway Shire (03 5232 9400). Lorne and Winchelsea are in Surf Coast Shire (03 5261 0600), and Camperdown is in Corangamite Shire. You can see the overlays on your property by searching your address on VicPlan.
