Tree work on the coast
Coastal gums and cypress take a hammering from salt wind and storms off the water, and many blocks around Apollo Bay are steep and tight. So we plan the access before anyone cuts. At Skenes Creek, a dead eucalyptus above houses and the road wasn’t safe to climb, so Tom worked from a hired spider lift and took it down in sections.

Tree rules around Apollo Bay
Apollo Bay, Skenes Creek and Marengo are in Colac Otway Shire. Several local rules decide whether a tree can go without a permit.
To see which overlays apply to your block, search your address on VicPlan. Then check with Colac Otway Shire on 03 5232 9400.
- Apollo Bay landscape areas: a permit is needed for native vegetation. Dead vegetation and pruning up to 20% of a plant are exempt.
- Skenes Creek: a landscape overlay requires a permit to remove or lop a tree. Small trunks (under 0.5 m around at 1 m high), dead or dying trees, and pruning for regrowth or shaping are exempt.
- Landslip areas: much of the Great Ocean Road coast is in an erosion management overlay, where removing any vegetation generally needs a permit.
- Town blocks: since September 2025, larger trees near the front or rear boundary of a residential or township lot can need a permit. The rules changed again on 24 September 2026.
