Cypress won’t grow back from bare wood
Cypress and many other conifers don’t reshoot from old, bare wood. Cut one back past its green growth and you’re left with a brown wall that stays brown.
So with an overgrown cypress hedge, the choice is usually between trimming the outside regularly to hold its size, or removing it and starting again. That’s what one owner chose: the old windbreak came out to make way for a native garden that’s easier to manage and better for local wildlife.
How often should my hedge be trimmed?
It depends on the species and how formal you want it to look. Most hedges need one to three trims a year, with fast growers needing more over spring and summer. We can set up regular visits.
Can you cut an overgrown hedge right back?
Some species handle a hard cut and regrow well; others, like cypress, don’t reshoot from bare wood. We’ll check the species and tell you how far it can safely go, or whether staged reductions or replacement make more sense.
Do you take the clippings away?
Yes — or we can chip them and leave them as garden mulch, which costs less. It’s your choice, and it’s written into the quote.
How much will it cost?
It depends on the hedge — its length, height, access and how overgrown it is,: size, species and condition, how close it is to buildings or lines, how easy it is to get gear in, and what you want done with the wood, chips and stump. That’s why we look first. The site assessment is free and your quote is a fixed price for the agreed work — the price we quote is the price you pay.
