Living among big trees is one of the best things about the Otways. It also means keeping an eye on them, especially heading into the windier months. It’s always safer, and usually cheaper, to deal with a problem tree before it becomes an emergency. Here are five signs it’s time to get one looked at.
1. Dead wood or hanging branches
Branches with no leaves, bark peeling away, or a broken limb caught up in the canopy (a “hanger”) can fall at any time — even on a still day. Eucalypts in particular can drop large limbs without warning.
2. Cracks, splits and tight forks
Look for cracks in the trunk or where big limbs join. Trees with two main stems growing in a tight “V” can split apart, especially if bark is trapped in the fork. A qualified arborist can tell whether the tree needs weight taken off, support, or removal.
3. Fungi, soft wood or hollows at the base
Mushrooms or bracket fungi at the base, soft or crumbly wood, and cavities near ground level can all point to decay in the trunk or roots — the parts that hold the tree up.
4. A new lean, or soil lifting
A tree that has always leaned is often fine. A tree that has started leaning, or has soil cracking or heaving up on one side of its base, may have root problems and needs checking quickly.
5. Heavy limbs over the house, driveway or power lines
Even a healthy tree can be a risk if big limbs hang over a roof, a driveway or somewhere people sit. Reducing or clearing those limbs is often all that’s needed. If a tree is near power lines, see who is responsible for what before anyone cuts.
