Why Choose Us

Why Good Pruning Pays for Itself

Bad pruning — the old ‘lopping’ approach — does more harm than good. Cut a tree wrong and it throws out weak, rushed regrowth that’s first to snap in an Otways storm. Done properly, pruning leaves a tree stronger, safer and better-looking for years.

At Otway Tree Care, we follow Australian Standards for pruning (AS 4373-2007). Whether we are weight-reducing a heavy limb over your driveway or thinning a canopy to improve light flow, every cut is made with the tree's long-term health in mind.

We help you manage your landscape assets without the stress of future failures. And if a tree is beyond saving, our tree removal team will handle it safely and cleanly — giving you honest advice at every step.

Qualified Arborist Oversight

Don't trust your trees to a "lopper." Our pruning is led by qualified arborists who understand tree biology, ensuring every cut promotes healing rather than decay.

Structural Integrity & Safety

We identify and remove over-extended or "heavy" limbs before they fail, reducing the "sail effect" during high winds and protecting your home and family.

Australian Standards Compliance

All our work is performed to the Pruning of Amenity Trees (AS 4373-2007) standard, ensuring your trees remain healthy, stable, and insurance-compliant.

Advanced Climbing & Access

We use specialised rigging and climbing equipment to reach high canopies without the need for heavy trucks on your lawn, protecting your delicate landscaping.

The "Spotless Site" Cleanup

Pruning creates thousands of small sticks and leaves. We ensure every twig is mulched or removed, leaving your garden beds and paths cleaner than we found them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest Advice. Expert Answers.

Good pruning decisions start with good information. Here are the questions our clients ask most before booking a pruning assessment.

Tom Kleindienst, qualified arborist at Otway Tree Care, overlooking the coast

What is the best time of year to prune my trees?

This depends on the species. Many trees are best pruned during dormancy in winter, while others respond better to summer pruning. We provide expert advice based on the specific trees on your property.

Can you "top" my tree to make it shorter?

We strongly advise against "topping," as it leads to weak regrowth and tree decay. Instead, we use "reduction pruning," which manages the height while maintaining the tree's natural shape and strength.

Will pruning help my tree survive a storm?

Yes. By thinning the canopy and removing dead or over-extended limbs, we reduce wind resistance, significantly lowering the risk of limb failure during high winds.

What is the difference between "Lopping" and "Pruning"?

Lopping is the practice of cutting branches at random lengths, which causes stress. Pruning is a scientific approach where we cut to specific "nodes" to encourage proper healing.

Are you insured for work near my house?

Absolutely. We carry Public Liability insurance specifically tailored for high-risk arboricultural work, providing total peace of mind while we work near your assets.

Do I need to be home while you work?

Not necessarily. As long as we have clear access to the trees, we can complete the work and send you completion photos and reports via our digital app.

Can you provide a health report for my trees?

Yes. If we notice signs of pests, fungal infections, or structural decay while pruning, we can provide a formal arborist report so you have documented evidence to act on before it becomes a hazard.
